16 October 2013 - 1 December 2013
Primorsky State Art Gallery invites residents and guests of Vladivostok to visit Treasures of the Himalayas, a unique exhibition of Buddhist art, from October 17 through December 1, 2013, at the Gallery’s main building at 12 Aleutskaya Street.
The Treasures of the Himalayas collection comprises approximately 500 exhibits: sculptures and ritual objects of metal, wood, bone, and gypsum, Tibetan hanging scrolls (thanki), musical instruments, appliqué ornaments, chiseled metal objects, ethnic decorations and many other objects created in the workshops of India, Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia, and Buryatia. Similar objects can only be found in the largest museums and select private collections. Cultural links between East and West, and their manifestations within Russia are reflected in artistic photos and slide shows.
Guests are in for a busy cultural program in the course of this project.
• Documentary and dramatized movie screenings telling the story of legendary Himalayan lamas.
• Lectures on Buddhist art and architecture, Tibetan culture and medicine. Master classes in drawing the eight auspicious symbols.
• Classes at which anyone can learn the theory and practice of the secrets of the Diamond Way of Buddhist meditation.
The Stupa That Fulfils Wishes interactive exhibit tells about all the different types of these sacred buildings. One of them will be presented at the exhibition. This is an authentic stupa, just like those set up in Bhutan, Tibet, Nepal, India and in the traditionally Buddhist regions of Russia: Buryatia, Kalmykia, Tuva. As one walks clockwise around a Stupa, it is customary to make a good wish for oneself and someone else…
Unique archeological finds provided by the Research Institute of Far Eastern History, Archeology and Ethnography (of the Far Eastern Division of the Russian Academy of Science) will be an exclusive part of the exhibition in Vladivostok. Artifacts, some of which date back from the 8th – 10th centuries, clearly demonstrate the historical connection of the Primorsky Region with Buddhist culture. Among these exhibits, visitors will see Churchens’ mysterious Vajra discovered by regional archeologists outside Ussuriisk.
Everybody who wants to can enjoy the amazing beauty and harmony of the rarest works of Buddhist art, opening for themselves the deep symbolism of sculptural and painted depictions of Buddga, and the stunning wisdom of one of the world’s most ancient religions.
The project was organized by the Cultural Heritage of the Himalayas International Public Organization for Conservation of Cultural and Historical Traditions of the Peoples of Central Asia, also receiving support from the Department for Culture of the Primorsky Regional Government, the Research Institute of Far Eastern History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Far Eastern Division of the Russian Academy of Science, and the Russian Association of Diamond Way Buddhists of the Karma Kagyu.
You can find more details about the Treasures of the Himalayas interactive project at http://exhibition.gimalai.org/
The exhibition will be open to the public from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm daily except Mondays, when it will be closed.
